The Safer Choice program reviews multiple aspects of a product before assigning the Safer Choice label, which signifies the product meets the Safer Choice Standard.
- Ingredients: EPA reviews all chemical ingredients, regardless of their percentage in the product. Every ingredient must meet strict safety criteria for both human health and the environment.
- Product performance: Products must pass category-specific performance standards defined in the Safer Choice Standard.
- Packaging: Sustainable packaging must meet the criteria defined in the Safer Choice Standard.
- pH: Products must meet pH standards that minimize the potential for skin and eye irritation or injury.
- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC): VOCs are restricted to minimize indoor air pollution and associated respiratory concerns.
